Our guest for this week’s Music at Pitt Podcast is Nicole Mitchell, world-renowned flutist and composer and the new director of Pitt’s Jazz Studies Program. Nicole joins us to talk about the upcoming 49th Annual Jazz Seminar and Concerts, the Jazz Studies program, her recent creative endeavors, and her favorite things about Pittsburgh.

The University of Pittsburgh has named Nicole M. Mitchell, an award-winning creative flutist, composer, bandleader and educator, as its William S. Dietrich II Endowed Chair in Jazz Studies, effective July 1, 2019.

It has been a difficult few days in Pittsburgh as our city reels from unspeakable tragedy. The Department of Music has been affected in very direct ways by the shootings at Tree of Life Synagogue. The victims and the survivors are our friends, colleagues, and mentors. The vibrant Squirrel Hill neighborhood is home to many of our faculty, staff, and students. The grief and healing has only begun.
