The Department of Music celebrated the careers of Professors Don Franklin and Mary Lewis as they retired from Pitt. Both professors were joined by family members, former staff, graduate and undergraduate students, and administrators from the University for a time to celebrate with shared memories and wishes for an invigorating future. Ethnomusicology

Chatham University will celebrate the Global Focus Year of West Africa at the Sounds of Africa Music Festival, Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3. The festival will feature several Pitt faculty, alumni, and grad students. More more

Congratulations to Bell Yung, who has been invited, and agreed, to serve on the Board of Advisors for the Institute of Chinese Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and attended a meeting at the Institute September 2-5, 2009.

Hee-sun Kim's (PhD 2004) Contemporary Kayagum Music in Korea offers the first book-length account of a new musical genre developed in post-war South Korea for kayagum, a traditional 12-stringed long board zither. More more

 

Composition & Theory

Composer Philip Thompson (PhD, 2002) created the score and produced the music for Will Zavala’s documentary Virgil Cantini: The Artist in Public. The film premieres on September 25 at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. More more

Mathew Rosenblum's new work, The Big Rip (A Science Fiction Cantata), will be premiered by the Calmus Vocal Ensemble of Leipzig and the Rascher Saxophone Quartet on September 10 at The Niedersächsische Musiktage (Lower Saxony Music Festival) in Hameln Germany. More more

Boston Modern Orchestra Project premiered Eric Moe's Kick & Ride, a concerto for drumset and orchestra, on Friday, May 22, at New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall. Moe's work received a very positive review in The Boston Globe. More more
