Heinz Chapel Choir

The Heinz Chapel Choir was founded in 1938 to coincide with the dedication of the Heinz Memorial Chapel, a gift to the University of Pittsburgh from Henry John Heinz, founder of the H.J. Heinz Company, and his children. This magnificent building is the choir’s home for the majority of its Pittsburgh performances. An auditioned student ensemble under the auspices of the university’s Music Department, the Choir sings music from a variety of time periods, cultural traditions, and in a wealth of languages, with a specialty in a cappella performance. Throughout its history, the Heinz Chapel Choir has been a home for students at the University of Pittsburgh who study a wide range of academics but share a love for choral music, a dedication to excellence, and a passion for reaching the hearts and souls of their audience. Since 2014, the choir has been under the direction of its tenth conductor, Dr. Susan Rice.

The members of HCC devote four hours per week for rehearsals, attend Choir Camp each semester, and may register for 1 college credit (MUSIC 0612) for their participation. Auditions for membership or to be considered for the alternate list are held during the first week of classes each fall semester. The ensemble can be heard in their highly regarded holiday concert series and spring concerts (broadcast on WQED-FM) and at special University functions. The Heinz Chapel Choir tours internationally and domestically on a three-year cycle in the spring, immediately following the close of the academic year.

Additional information about the Heinz Chapel Choir and a current performance calendar can be found on the ensemble’s website.
