The Department of Music comprises outstanding faculty and highly motivated students pursuing music in an interdisciplinary environment which allows for the exploration of Western and world music traditions. The Department has a distinguished faculty of international reputation.
Core faculty members are active in all areas of scholarship, recipients of significant commissions and performances, and are regularly awarded grants from leading foundations for the arts and humanities.
Our performance faculty are established professionals in Pittsburgh's vibrant music scene. They share a rich combination of musical excellence and practical experience, providing students with a solid understanding of what it takes to succeed in the competitive world of music.
Part-time faculty bring their experience outside the classrooms of Pitt to broaden the music department's scholarly and creative expertise
Our graduate students enjoy a personal, interdisciplinary approach to their studies. Graduate students are frequent participants in scholarly conferences, receive prestigious grants and fellowships, and attend performances of their works.
Our undergraduates, often double and even triple majors, set high standards for energy and intellect within the university. Undergraduates take advantage of the wide variety of performance opportunities that arise as a benefit of being in a small department with diverse musical offerings.
Our alumni are leaders in music and scholarship around the U.S. and the world. Our graduate students have a high rate of placement in academic and professional positions, and our undergraduates enter graduate programs in music and continue their musical aspirations in a variety of ways, both professionally and avocationally, throughout their lives.
Friendly and experienced staff will help you at every phase of your involvement with the Department of Music.
The Department of Music’s Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion focuses on practical ways to implement the commitments outlined in our Departmental Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (link). Our projects have ranged widely, from setting up feedback loops between different constituencies in our department, to facilitating student interest groups, to updating restroom signage. We are available, individually and collectively, to talk to any member of our department who may want to share experiences or ask questions related to diversity, equity, or inclusion at Pitt.
