Josh Brew's Summer Immersive Fellowship with Legon Palmwine Band and Humanities Engage

Pitt Ethnomusicology student Josh Brew was awarded a Pitch Your Own Summer Immersive Fellowship through Humanities Engage for his innovative research on music sustainability of musicians, instruments, and the culture of Palmwine music in Ghana in Summer 2022. For this project, Josh worked with Legon Palmwine Band in Accra, Ghana. Drawing on his skills as a musician, educator, and organizer, Josh collaborated with musicians to host workshops that brought musicians together from all over Accra to discuss the contemporary music business and gain musician-specific professional development. The research from his summer fellowship will serve as a case study in his doctoral dissertation. Josh plans to begin his dissertation fieldwork later this year in Ghana.

Josh's work was featured in the September 8, 2022 edition of Pittwire.
