Music on the Edge: New Morse Code and Jamie Jordan

Date

March 5, 2016 - 8:00pm

Copresented with The Andy Warhol Museum

Imaginative cello/percussion duo New Morse Code shares a program with dynamic vocalist Jamie Jordan.

Praised for her "alluring clarity" by The New York Times, vocalist Jamie Jordan will perform Philippe Leroux’s Je brûle, dit-elle un jour à un camarade along with works for voice and electronics including Paul Coleman’s mock me, Jacob Cooper’s Unspun, and Kaija Saariaho’s Lonh.

The New Haven Independent enthusiastically describes cello and percussion duo New Morse Code as “not just playing for the future of music, but vibrantly living in and shaping it.” New Morse Code's performance will include Andy Akiho’s Karakurenei, Pulitzer Prize-winner Caroline Shaw’s Boris Kerner (an NMC commission!), Steve Reich’s Clapping Music, Nick Didkovsky’s Caught by the Sky with Wire, and Andy Akiho’s 21

New Morse Code is Hannah Collins and Michael Compitello who activate the unexpected range and unique sonic world of cello and percussion to catalyze and champion the compelling works of young composers. To Hannah and Michael, collaboration involves drawing upon mutual influences while generating and refining material together over an extended period of time.  Through close work with colleagues such as pianist-composer Paul Kerekes, steel pan virtuoso and composer Andy Akiho, Hawaiian composer and visual artist Tonia Ko, and Pulitzer Prize-winning violinist/vocalist/composer Caroline Shaw, New Morse Code generates a singular and personal repertoire which reflects both their friends’ creative voices and their own perspectives. They will present new collaborative works on the Pittsburgh concert.
