A talented group of international jazz musicians will convene on the University of Pittsburgh campus Oct. 31 through Nov. 5 for the 46th annual Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert, the longest-running event of its kind in the country.
What better way to kick off Jazz Week than the Pitt Jazz Ensemble in a free concert at the William Pitt Union? Ralgh Guzzi leads the ensemble in a program of jazz standards inlcuding music by Mary Lou Williams, Billy Strayhorn and Errol Garner.

From Nov. 2 through 7, the campus will be alive with Jazz Week activities—guest lecturers, a performance by the Pitt Jazz Ensemble, the screening of a jazz film, and free seminars by the guest musicians. All events are open to the public. The week culminates with the Pitt Jazz Concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7 in Carnegie Music Hall, 4400 Forbes Ave., Oakland.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette selected the 44th Annual Jazz Seminar Concert as one of the City’s top-ten Jazz events of the 2014. Led by Director of Jazz Studies Geri Allen, the all-star ensemble dazzled a packed house and critics as well. According to the P-G,
"This was dominated by the ladies, with participation from the entire ACS Trio -- pianist Geri Allen, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and bassist Esperanza Spaulding. The Howard University vocal ensemble Afro Blue stole the show at the end."

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ranked this year's Jazz Seminar Concert one of the year's best jazz events in its annual "Best of…" issue. According to the P-G,
"…pianist Geri Allen…wasted no time in putting her stamp on the annual event, bringing in vocalist Carmen Lundy and tap dancer Brinae Ali."

The Department of Music’s History of Jazz course has been selected “Best Class” by readers of The Pitt News in the campus paper’s annual “Best of…” issue. The Pitt News editorial staff describes the course as “a crowd pleaser” where students learn about the “most talented artists in one of music’s most influential genres.”
