Department of Music, University of Pittsburgh

Deadline for Proposals: December 15, 2023 at 11:59 PM EDT

The Music Graduate Student Organization at the University of Pittsburgh welcomes proposals for 20-minute paper presentations, performance demonstrations, or any combination of the two, for its 2024 Conference, Music, Time, and Space. We invite students, researchers, musicians, sound artists, and practitioners from diverse disciplines to join us in exploring the presence of time in all its manifestations and implications within the realm of music and sound studies.

Conference Theme

We understand music, time, and space as interconnected: Music and sound shape time into what it is, what it was, what it could have been, and what it can be. Additionally, the particular space occupied by bodies, people, and communities in time highlights how certain creative capacities play out in relation to music and sound. This conference places the various facets of time and temporal trajectories at the center of our investigation of music and sound, inviting its participants to unravel the intricate relationships between these elements, broadly construed.

We welcome proposals that engage the fields of historical musicology, ethnomusicology, jazz studies, music theory, composition, performance, etc., as well as from anyone working with music/sound beyond these sub-disciplines. Prospective presenters are invited to submit proposals for papers, performance demonstrations, or other scholarly and creative presentations on any subject of musical interest.

We seek contributions that respond to themes including, but not limited to:

  • Music and Storytelling
  • Cultural Memory, Nostalgia, Reminiscence
  • Media and Time
  • Trans-temporal Narratives
  • Spatial Resonances
  • Time and Locality
  • Process and Politics
