University of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Presents 20th Century Violin Concertos, Mahler throughout the Spring Semester

Roger Zahab and the University of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will launch a series of concerts featuring important violin concertos of the early 20th century, including Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1 (1916–17), Sibelius’ Violin Concerto (1903–04), And Carl Nielsen’s Violin Concerto (1911). Outstanding student musicians Ian Chow and Joe Liu will perform the Prokofiev and Sibelius concerti on February 6 and 20 respectively, while Pittsburgh Symphony member Laura Motchalov will perform the Nielsen on March 26.

Pitt’s orchestra will also continue its presentation of Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, performing the second and third movements of that work, performing the entire symphony for its final concert of the season on April 16.

The concert will include Mendelssohn’s well known Hebrides Overture (also known as Fingal’s Cave), Brahms’s Symphony No. 1 in C Minor, and the premiere of a composition by Pitt student composer Matthew Shepherd.
