Roger Zahab and the University of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will launch a series of concerts featuring important violin concertos of the early 20th century, including Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1 (1916–17), Sibelius’ Violin Concerto (1903–04), And Carl Nielsen’s Violin Concerto (1911). Outstanding student musicians Ian Chow and Joe Liu will perform the Prokofiev and Sibelius concerti on February 6 and 20 respectively, while Pittsburgh Symphony member Laura Motchalov will perform the Nielsen on March 26.

The University of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s upcoming concert will feature Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra violinist Laura Motchalov performing Nielsen’s Violin Concerto. Pitt’s orchestra will also continue its presentation of Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, performing the second and third movements of that work, performing the entire symphony for its final concert of the season on April 16.

Roger Zahab and the University of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will present an ambitious program to end their fall semester. The concert will include Mendelssohn’s well known Hebrides Overture (also known as Fingal’s Cave), Brahms’s Symphony No. 1 in C Minor, and the premiere of a composition by Pitt student composer Matthew Shepherd.
