Music Department Awards

The Music Department Awards listed below are granted annually unless otherwise specified. The associated financial award varies. The selection committee may designate one or two recipients for each award at their discretion.

The Mildred Miller Posvar Scholarship - Awarded for outstanding performance or scholarship to a student entering his or her senior year who is majoring in any field of music.

The Alfred d'Auberge Scholarship - Awarded to a student majoring in music for achievement in music performance or scholarship.

The Anita J. Curka Scholarship - Awarded for outstanding performance (preference is given to those studying voice or piano) to a student entering his or her junior or senior year who is a resident of Pennsylvania and pursuing a degree in music. The student should also demonstrate personal qualities that distinguish them as role models.

The Gluck Student Assistance Fund - Awarded to support the educational efforts of worthy students. It can be used for books, instruments, fees, supplies, or any other beneficial purpose. Awarded biennially. Not available for 2018-19 academic year.

The Leonard S. and Mildred E. Gerlowski Student Award - Awarded to a student who plays a musical instrument and participates in one or more local public performances during the school year. Preference will be given to students who play the violin. Not available for 2018-19 academic year.


Applications are now being accepted for the Music Department Awards listed above for academic year 2018-2019. Students in good academic standing who will be seniors, juniors, or sophomores during 2018-2019 and are active in the Music Department are encouraged to apply. 

Due date for all applications is Monday, April 9 at 5pm. No applications will be accepted after that time.

Applications must include the following:

  • Current transcript (may be unofficial),
  • Resume (1-2 pages),
  • Essay (approx. 500 words, see prompt below)
  • Name and email address for Music Faculty member who has agreed to serve as a reference (may not be Dr. Rice or Prof. Zahab); please confirm your recommender's willingness to write on your behalf before submitting your application

Essay prompt:

If you receive this Music Award, what would it allow you to do that you currently lack the financial means to pursue? Please be specific. How do you imagine your proposed research, intellectual exploration, or artistic experience might influence your existing course of study and your future?
