The Department of Music celebrated the careers of Professors Don Franklin and Mary Lewis as they retired from Pitt. Both professors were joined by family members, former staff, graduate and undergraduate students, and administrators from the University for a time to celebrate with shared memories and wishes for an invigorating future. Hee-sun Kim's (PhD 2004) Contemporary Kayagum Music in Korea offers the first book-length account of a new musical genre developed in post-war South Korea for kayagum, a traditional 12-stringed long board zither. More more

Assistant Professor Adriana Helbig has received a Fellowship for Fall, 2009 at the new Center for the Humanities at the University of Pittsburgh. More more

The Department of Music is now accepting applications for the The 2009 University of Pittsburgh/BNY Mellon Jazz Scholarship. A $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to a full-time undergraduate student

Composition & Theory

Boston Modern Orchestra Project premiered Eric Moe's Kick & Ride, a concerto for drumset and orchestra, on Friday, May 22, at New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall. Moe's work received a very positive review in The Boston Globe. More more

Doctoral candidate James Ogburn and Federico Garcia (PhD 2006) will have compositions performed by the American Composers Orchestra at the ACO/Penn Reading Sessions and Lab in Philadelphia on April 16-17. More more
