Nathan Frink Presents Music of Ornette Coleman

Date

January 31, 2014 - 8:00pm

Jazz Studies doctoral candidate Nathan Frink will present a series of free jazz compositions transcribed from Ornette Coleman’s records issued between 1971-1973. This period is described as a “transitional phase in Coleman’s compositional methodology” in Frink’s MA thesis defended in 2012.  During this time, Coleman expanded his improvising ensemble to as many as 9 pieces, the largest in his career before the creation of his symphonic work, Skies of America.  The concert will feature Frink on alto saxophone and fellow Pitt graduate students: John Bagnato (bass), Lee Martin (voice) and John Petrucelli (tenor saxophone). It will also feature notable local musicians Joe Badaczewski (trumpet) and Gordon Nunn (drum set).
