Come hear the Pitt Jazz Ensemble perform as they unleash the powerful sounds of big band jazz. Joining the ensemble this year are special guest artist Don Braden on saxophone with Direcotr of Jazz Studies Geri Allen on piano, Paul Thompson on bass, James Johnson, III on drums, and John Bagnato on Guitar.

The next Music Monday features music by Eric Moe and Roger Zahab with the composers performing on piano and violin respectively. The program also includes performances by Young-Soo Kim (guitar), Suzanna Hinkle (cello), and Rena Jiang (piano).

Jazz studies PhD candidate and guitarist Young-Soo Kim gave a special performance during the winter recess as part of a benefit concert hosted by the Beautiful Foundation USA. Proceeds raised from the event were used to establish an emergency relief fund to help victims of Hurricane Sandy, and to help prepare for future disasters.

Another line-up of international jazz greats is in place for the 42nd Annual Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert, which runs Oct. 30-Nov. 3.

This year’s graduation marked the end of a particularly fruitful year for the Department of Music graduating class, current students, and alumni.

2012 Graduates and Current Students

The Department of Music of the University of Pittsburgh seeks to make a faculty appointment in Jazz Studies beginning September 1, 2012, pending budgetary approval. The appointment will be made at the level of Assistant Professor in the tenure stream.
