Dear members of the University of Pittsburgh community,
 
Our beloved Geri A. Allen, Associate Professor and Director of Jazz Studies, passed away yesterday after a year-long battle with cancer.  She was surrounded by family and life-long friends.
 

Assistant professor Michael Heller recently had a wonderful opportunity to visit with Ernie Garner, the twin brother of the late Erroll Garner. Heller and Garner met in the William Pitt Union to see the Jazz Hall of Fame which currently features an exhibit on Erroll Garner that Professor Heller curated. We are so grateful Mr.

Congratulations to the Class of 2017! Graduates of the BA, MA, and PhD programs gathered together with faculty, staff, and family members for a meal and recognition ceremony for our artist/scholars and the milestones they have achieved.

Doctoral Candidate John Petrucelli has been selected as a composer/performer for the New Hazlett Theater’s 2017–18 CSA (Community Supported Art) Series. Conceived as an artistic analogy to the community supported agriculture movement, the New Hazlett’s series seeks to support local artists and provide a professional performance environment for their work.

Michael Mackey will defend his doctoral dissertation "From Pittsburgh to the Pershing: Orchestration, Interaction, and Influence in the Early Work of Ahmad Jamal." This event is open to the pubic.

Graduatate Student Danielle Maggio is collaborating with Ryan Arts Center to present "Celebrating Mary Lou Williams: Pittsburgh's Bebop Queen." The event will include a screening of the film Mary Lou Williams: The Lady Who Swings The Band with a brief lecture, and performances by Danielle Maggio (vocals), Samuel Okoh-Boateng (piano), Gizelxanath and the Afro Yaqui Vocal Ensemble (perf

Pitt Jazz Ensemble hosts bands from Falk and CAPA Middle Schools and West Virginia University. Guest adjudicator Ellen Rowe will perform with Pitt's Faculty Jazz Sextet and lead the Pitt Jazz Ensemble in two of her own compositions.
