Three Upcoming Grapes of Wrath Opera Programs
PITT ARTS is pleased to announce three important programs in November 2008 for the Pittsburgh premiere of Pittsburgh Opera’s The Grapes of Wrath.
On Tuesday, November 11th from 12-1 PM in the William Pitt Union Assembly Room, PITT ARTS offers a free opera luncheon featuring Ricky Ian Gordon, composer of the opera, Grapes of Wrath and librettist (writer of the text for the score) Michael Korie. Enjoy a free lunch and meet these extraordinary creative talents who took Steinbeck’s classic novel and breathed new life into it with opera. Ricky Ian Gordon will play and sing some of the pieces from the opera.
Pitt Music Department Colloquium on the opera, Grapes of Wrath from 4- 5 PM in Room 132 of the Music Building on Friday November 14th. Free. Reception to follow. Ricky Ian Gordon and Michael Korie explore the contemporary relevance of the issues and themes in the Steinbeck novel, such as the foreclosure crisis, economic downturn, and domestic diaspora. Music is the medium for the message: American musical idiom, such as blues and bluegrass is used to bring literary ideas off the page and into this uniquely American opera.
