Roger Zahab and the University of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will launch a series of concerts featuring important violin concertos of the early 20th century, including Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1 (1916–17), Sibelius’ Violin Concerto (1903–04), And Carl Nielsen’s Violin Concerto (1911). Outstanding student musicians Ian Chow and Joe Liu will perform the Prokofiev and Sibelius concerti on February 6 and 20 respectively, while Pittsburgh Symphony member Laura Motchalov will perform the Nielsen on March 26.
Other highlights of the Orchestra’s schedule during the spring semester include the presentation of individual movements of Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, culminating with a performance of the complete work on the orchestra’s April 16th concert, and premieres of new works by Jeremy Beck and Pitt graduate composer Benjamin Harris
The first concert, featuring Prokofiev and Mahler, takes place on Wednesday, February 6 at 8 p.m. at Bellefield Hall Auditorium (315 S. Bellefield Avenue) and is free to the public.
The University of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performs not only works of the standard art music literature, but new works, especially those of Pitt’s student composers. Outstanding students appear as concerto soloists, and the personnel consists of music students, students from the University at large, faculty, staff, and members of the metropolitan community.
