Published on November 27, 2007

On Friday November 30, the University of Pittsburgh Men’s Glee Club and director Richard Teaster will present Joseph Rheinberger’s Mass in F, Op. 190, with organist Donald Fellows. Duquesne University’s Pappert Men’s Chorale will also join the Glee Club as guest artists. Along with the Rehinberger Mass, the program will feature a variety of holiday music, including carols from Austria, Italy, and France and American holiday classics.

Listen to the Men’s Glee Club sing Cantate Domino, a track from their most recent CD.

The upcoming concert takes place on Friday, November 30, 2007 at 8 p.m. in Synod Hall (125 N. Craig Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15213, behind St. Paul’s Cathedral). General admission is $10, student and senior admission is $5, Pitt students are admitted free with I.D. Tickets are available at the door.

The Men’s Glee club, founded in 1890, is the oldest non-athletic extracurricular activity on campus. The club has enjoyed successful tours throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Their 2007 European tour was the club’s first visit to Europe since 1990. They have been musical guests at two World’s Fairs, and continue to be featured in various television and radio appearances, including a spot on the CBS soap opera As the World Turns. The club has been recorded for radio broadcast locally by WWWS-FM and WQED-FM, and featured as part of WQED’s Performance in Pittsburgh series.

A Mellon Fellow Abroad-Part II

Published on November 21, 2007

During recent fieldwork, Andrew Mellon Pre-doctoral Fellow J. S. Kofi Gbolonyo took this photo of drum makers in the town of Peki Yensu, Ghana as they tested out their recent creations. These are the same makers who crafted the instruments currently in use by Pitt’s African Music and Dance Ensemble. According to Kofi, the trumpet is used only for rhythmic reinforcement, and not melodically. The use of the trumpet in this context is a good example of how African communities appropriated elements of colonial influence into indigenous culture.

Kofi drew on his fieldwork for recent presentations at the American Orff-Schulwerk Association 2007 National Conference
which took place in San José, California November 14-17. He gave three sessions focusing on African percussion, rhythmic theories, and analysis; world music education and pedagogical approaches; and Orff-Afrique techniques. (more…)
