Students from all over the University participate in musical activities and performances, and are often joined in the ensembles by faculty and members of the community at large. Find out how to join the different music department ensembles below.
The University of Pittsburgh has named Nicole M. Mitchell, an award-winning creative flutist, composer, bandleader and educator, as its William S. Dietrich II Endowed Chair in Jazz Studies, effective July 1, 2019.

Pitt Jazz Ensemble hosts big bands from the region including Falk Middle School, CAPA Middle School, and CAPA High School. Sherrie Maricle, Drummer and leader of the DIVA Jazz Orchestra, will give all participating bands feedback on their performances.
The Pitt Jazz Ensemble will kick-off the 48th Annual Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert with a free lunch time performance in the Lower Lounge of the William Pitt Union. The program will feature vocalist Rosa Zhang and the ensemble will perform music by Sammy Nestico, Gordon Goodwin, John Clayton, Freddie Hubbard, Thad Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, and an original composition by Director Ralph Guzzi.
Auditions and signups will be held for Department of Music student ensembles at the beginning of the fall term. Our choirs and instrumental ensembles are open to students throughout the University and you are encouraged to apply regardless of your major. Below, please find specific instructions for each of our ensembles.
